It's also much more expensive than Houdini, but it looks interesting. It seemed more user friendly in terms of interface than Blender 2.8, but a little less precise and a little more fiddly. So instead, I watched a guy on Youtube model something I've made before in Blender: a treasure chest. At less than $300 per year, it is also the cheapest option.Ĭ4D: Since I'm not on a Windows 10 machine, I can't try this right now. All of the effects look great (obviously), and Mantra is a good enough renderer that it is used in production. While the tools are harder to use, Houdini gives you all kinds of power Blender doesn't have, and the flexibility of node networks is insane. But every time I've completed a project in Houdini, it has been beyond what I think I could ever get out of Blender. Houdini: Direct modeling is a little painful and slow, and I worry that once I branch away from tutorials to creating completely original work, I won't be smart enough to work efficiently with the procedural modeling workflow. Exporting stuff from a Blender file to anything other than the Unity game engine seems dicey at best. I'm aware that some people have been switching from paid software to Blender for modeling, but I don't have the experience to know if Blender is really lacking something I need to go far with art or produce cool game assets. It's texture painting tools won't win any awards either. Modeling seems fine, but it's horrible for any piece that requires a simulation (rigid is OK, but just OK). It's expensive, and I don't want to have to buy second piece of software to make up for the stuff it doesn't do as well.īlender: I have the most experience with this and have made some OK looking art. Modo: All it seems to having going for is smooth modeling tools. I'd love to give C4D a try, but I don't currently have Windows 10 on my computer, and won't be able to upgrade to it for a couple of months. I've dabbled around with several pieces of software trying to find what would best for my needs. Hi! I'm a 3D graphic hobbyist who has some interest in potentially getting into indie game development over the next few months.
